Located around the city of Petersburg, VA. It preserves the battlefields and siege lines of a 10-month struggle, June 1864 to April 1865.
A map orientation program is held in the visitor center. There are two self-guiding driving tours: a 4-mile route through the main battlefield unit, and a 20-mile drive along the Siege Line. Most stops have interpretive exhibits and several offer short walking trails to important sites.
Highlights:
Living-history demonstrations, in the summer, of loading and firing both mortar and cannon. Authentically reconstructed sutler's store and soldiers' hut in encampment. Miles of original trenches, including the Crater, created where Union troops tunnelled under Confederate lines and set off 4 tons of gunpowder. Reconstructed tunnel entrance. City Point, 8 miles east of the battlefield, was a major Federal supply depot; Gen. Grant's headquarters cabin has been rebuilt. Five Forks, the scene of the last major battle of the siege.
